Accessibility
Jezwa aims to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. We are not claiming we have got there — nobody has audited this site independently. What follows is what we check automatically on every build, what we already know is wrong, and how to tell us about anything else.
What we are aiming at
The target is WCAG 2.2 level AA across every public page. In practice that means text you can read at 200% zoom without losing content, a visible focus ring on everything you can reach with a keyboard, real headings and lists rather than styled paragraphs, touch targets big enough to hit, and a site that still works with animation turned off.
What we check, on every build
These are not aspirations. Each one is run by a script against a real browser before anything ships, across every page and five screen widths from 320 pixels to 1440.
- No horizontal scrolling at normal size, and none at 200% zoom.
- Contrast measured from the rendered page, not from a palette document. Where text sits over a photograph, the image pixels underneath it are sampled and every layer above them composited, so the number is the real one rather than a guess.
- The first thing the keyboard reaches is a skip link, and it becomes visible when it is focused.
- Every page has exactly one first-level heading, and heading levels do not skip.
- Every page has a main landmark, and every image has an alt attribute — which is empty when the image is decorative, because that is the correct answer for decoration.
- Controls meet the WCAG minimum target size. We set ourselves a larger 44-pixel target on top of that, and anything under it is reported for review rather than quietly allowed.
- Nothing keeps animating when the browser asks for reduced motion.
- Form controls have real labels, and the cart announces changes to assistive technology rather than changing silently.
What we know is not right yet
- No independent audit. Everything above is our own testing. Automated checks catch a minority of real accessibility problems, and we have not yet paid anyone to find the rest.
- No screen-reader testing by a screen-reader user. We have checked the structure the markup exposes. That is not the same as somebody actually using the site with a screen reader, and we know the difference.
- A short-screen edge case on the home page. On a landscape phone under roughly 605 pixels tall, the opening image takes more of the screen than intended and the section beneath it is pushed out of view. It is recorded and not yet fixed.
- The images are placeholders. The photographs on the home page are temporary and will be replaced. Their descriptions will be rewritten with them.
Not decided yet A formal accessibility conformance report, and an independent audit.
Both need commissioning. Until one exists, this page describes testing rather than claiming conformance.
